Wood Burning FAQs

Wood burning models: AS33, AS39, AS44, AS49, AS63.

Q: Are these fireplaces safe to use?

A: Yes. They are listed by the PFS testing agency and the ICC, or International Code Council. They have also been tested by Underwriters Laboratories, UL 127 Standard for safety. Additionally, there are quality control requirements used during manufacturing.

Q: Can the fireplace be installed on a wood floor?

A: Yes. Be sure to put the necessary metal base under the unit that is sold by MFI. You also have the option of using a CMU block.

Q: Does the outside air kit need to be installed on the fireplace?

A: To find out, you will need to check the local building code. It will be able to tell you whether or not it is required in your area. Even though it is much more efficient to use the outside air kit, the fireplace will work fine without it.

Q: Is it necessary to install firebrick inside the firebox?

A: Yes. You can hire a mason to lay the firebrick for you, or Capo can supply the firebrick panels for effortless installation.

Q: What are the minimum and maximum heights for these masonry fireplaces?

A: The maximum height of the fireplace, when installed, is 80 feet. The minimum height is 14 feet if the chimney is straight, 17 feet if not straight.

Q: Should I put a grate or log holder in the fireplace?

A: Yes. Using a grate to hold the wood will help with safety and better combustion.

Q: Is it possible to install a mantel or decorative marble or stone on the front of the fireplace?

A: Yes, just make sure to adhere to the installation instructions for safety precautions.

Q: Am I allowed to install decorative gas logs or a log lighter in the fireplace?

A: Yes, both are allowed. Once again, follow the manufacturer’s instructions on safe installation and execution.

Q: Can a glass door be installed on the fireplace?

A: Yes, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep the doors completely open when using the fireplace.

Q: What about installing this fireplace on the upper floors of a building?

A:  Masonry fireplaces have a very lightweight construction. Therefore, installing one on the upper levels of a building will work in most instances. Have a structural engineer take a look at the potential installation area to figure out the load limit of the flooring.

Q: Are there any see-through fireplace options available?

A: Yes, the MFPST43 model. In most installations, you will need to include a chimney exhaust type fan.

Q: Can these fireplaces be installed outside?

A: Yes, they are able to be installed BOTH indoors and outdoors.
